The set up is capable to study the loading and floodingcharacteristics. It is a packed column packed withRasching Rings where the Air is counter currently fed tothe column. Liquid holdup in the column increases theweight of column and also reduces the effective porosityof packing. This reduction in porosity decreases the gasvelocity, increases the pressure drop and changes thevalue of mass transfer co-efficient. The water is fed fromthe top of the column and loading & floodingcharacteristic are observed on various flow rates of Airand Water. The apparatus is closed circuit type providedwith suitable capacity tank, pump, necessary pipe lineswalls & rotametres for water & air to measure the flowrate of fluids.

The apparatus has been designed to introduce studentsto the fundamental characteristics of the behaviour ofthe particle system, in particular the relationship betweenthe drag coefficient of falling particles and Reynoldsnumber. Particles covering a range of sizes and densitiesare supplied and the experiments are conducted byallowing single particles to fall through a number ofdifferent liquids contained in a vertical glass tube. Therate of fall of the particle is determined by timing theirpassage between two marks on the walls of the glasstubes. Observation of the particle movement is aided bythe provision of a shielded fluorescent tube lightmounted on the backboard. Particles can be removedfrom the bottom of the tubes without the necessity ofdraining the liquid. A valve system is provided at thebottom of each tube to allow the particles to be removedwith the minimum loss of liquid.
