The York Scheibel's Column falls in the class of gravityoperatedextractors with mechanical agitation. Thepresence of alternatively agitating and calming sections ina York Scheibel's column yield higher extraction efficiencythan the conventional packed column. In the setup acontinuous counter current contact between the solventand solute phases is made which results into extract andraffinate streams. Rotameters are used to measure theflow of solvent and solute respectively. The continuousand dispersed phase streams are metered and derivedfrom separate containers. Each stage consists of a wovenwire mesh section and a mixing section. The propellerspeed can be controlled to the desired value by acontroller. Total set-up is housed in a well-designed rigidstructure. The structure also supports tanks, piping,Rotameter, panel and other units.

The solvent is introduced nearthe bottom of the column and it flow upward countercurrentlyto the solids. A pump supplies the solvent andflow rate is monitored by means of a Rotameter. At thebottom of column a screw conveyor arrangement is doneto remove the extracted solids driven by means of anelectric motor. Solvent feed tank is kept in a bath fittedwith heater and digital temperature controller is used tomaintain the constant temperature.

Crystallization is the formation of solid particles within ahomogeneous phase. It is aJacketed round bottom semi cylindrical trough open atthe top. Cooling water flows through the jacket. A ribbonmixer is provided in crystallizer trough, which rotates atlow rpm for agitation of saturated solution. The saturatedsolution is prepared in a tank fitted with heater and astirrer. This hot feed is fed at one end of the crystallizerand flows slowly towards the other end while beingcooled and is allowed to flow back in hot feed tankmaking the process continuous. The crystals sediments atthe bottom of the trough, and can be washed out at theend of process. The pump circulates cooling water andthe Rotameter measures flow rate. Instrumentation isprovided for measuring the temperatures at differentpoints.
