The set-up is designed to determine thermal conductivity of insulating materials in the form of slab. The apparatus consists of main central heater and ring guard heater, sandwiched between the specimens. Two identical specimens are clamped between heater that ensures unidirectional heat flow through specimen. Cooling platesare provided on either side of the specimen. Cooling water is supplied by laboratory overhead tank at constanthead condition by the end user. Temperature sensors are mounted on various places and are displayed by a Digital Temperature Indicator. The whole assembly is kept inchamber and insulated by ceramic wool. A Digital Temperature Control facility is provided to have a smooth control on desired temperature conditions as per end user requirements. This control facilitates end user to control required heat input to the heaters, automatically, and further steady state of experiment is achieved in very less time as compared to manual control. Electronic energy meter will be provided to measure the heat input.

The present set-up offers a comparative study of Vertical & Horizontal condenser, which can be operated one at a time. It consists of a horizontal and a vertical condenserof shell & tube type fitted with steam traps from where condensate is collected in measuring cylinder. Cold fluid flows through tubes and steam flows through the shell.Steam generator with level indicator to maintain level ofwater, is fitted with heater controlled by a Digital Temperature controller. A junction of control valves is provided to select and operate either horizontal or vertical condenser. A Rotameter with control valve is fitted in water line to control and measure the cooling water supply. Temperature of inlet and outlet of both hot & cold fluids are measured by temperature sensors.

The Tubular Heat Exchanger is the simplest form of Heat Exchanger, which consists of two concentric tubes carrying hot and cold fluids. In the present set-up the tubes are separated into two sections to reduce the overall length and allow to measure the midway temperature of both fluids. This way the Heat Exchanger assumes a U type formation. Hot water flows through inner tube in one direction only & cold water flows over the inner tube in annulus. Direction of cold fluid flow can be changed from parallel or counter to hot water so that unit can be operated as parallel or counter flow heat exchanger. Temperature sensors are installed at various and appropriate locations to record the temperature of fluids at the time of running the experiment. Stainless Steel Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger are popular in industries because they occupy less space and offer reasonable temperature drop. The apparatus consists of acrylic shell, inside which Stainless Steel tubes with baffles on outer side are fitted. This is single-pass heat exchanger so that hot water passes from one end of shell to the other end through the tubes. Condensation is a phase change heat transfer process occurring in many industrial applications, such as in steam power plants, refrigeration plants etc. Thus this is one of the important heat transfer process as present inmechanical and chemical engineering applications. The condensation of vapour on a surface is of two types: 1. Drop wise Condensation, 2. Film wise Condensation. This setup is designed for determining heat transfer co-efficient of two types of condensation and for visualization of these processes. It consists of a vertical frame. Condensation tubes are fitted inside compact glass cylinder. Steam generator is fitted at the backside of the cylinder. Steam comes directly from generator to the cylinder. Two valves are fitted to control flow rate of water in individual tubes. Digital Temperature Indicator monitors the temperatures. Pressure gauge and Rotameter can observe steam pressure and cold water flow rates respectively. A Digital temperature Controller is provided for controlling the temperature of Steam. Water level indicator is provided in steam generator. Condensate is measured by a measuring cylinder and stop watch.

In most industrial processes including reactors, heat is to be added or extracted to control the process. The addition and removal of heat is done by passing hot water in jacket fitted to the outside of the vessel or passing cold water in helical coil inside the vessel. For effective heat transfer and even distribution of heat, the liquid inside is continuously agitated. The present set-up offers us a comparative study of Jacket & Helical coil, which can be operated simultaneously. It is a Stainless steel-304 grade jacketed vessel inside which a helical coil of stainless steel is fitted. A variable speed stirrer is fitted in vessel. In this system hot water is allowed to enter inside either the jacket or helical coil. Variation in temperature of water, inside the vessel, is measured and is noted. Plate Type Heat Exchanger consists of frame in which independent metal plates are clamped between a head and follower. The plates are sealed at their outer edges and around the ports by gaskets, which are so arranged that the liquid and the heating/cooling media be directed alternately into passages formed between the plates. The hot fluid enters at one side of the fixed end cover and flows through alternate channels between the plates and leaves the exchanger through a connection at other fixed end cover. The cold fluid enters at one side of the fixed end cover, and flows in counter current flow through alternate channels between the plates and leaves the exchanger at the other side of the fixed end cover.
