Description:
The present set-up is designed to accommodate different types of heat exchangers accessories, one at a time, most commonly used in industries. These Heat Exchangers can alternatively be installed on the same set-up. For hot water circulation through the heat exchanger, a temperature controlled heating system and a fixed speed circulating pump with by-pass to vary the hot water flow rate through the heat exchanger, are provided. Cold water supply is to be provided from laboratory overhead tank at constant head condition by the end user. The set- up is designed with quick release hot and cold-water connection, which allows rapid connection to the heat exchanger under experiment and for changing the run either parallel to counter or counter to parallel. Suitable measuring the temperature of both fluids at inlet and outlet. Flow meters are provided for each fluid to observe fluid flow rate.

The apparatus consists of fabricated SS shell, inside which SS tubes are fitted. Hot water passes to one end through the tubes and exit to another end. The cold water is admitted at the one end of shell, which passes over the hot-water tubes. The tubes are arranged in the shell so that the flow of cold and hot fluid crosses each other to make it cross flow. For hot water, a recirculation type water tank is provided, fitted with heaters and Digital temperature controller.

Cold water at constant head condition is to be provided from laboratory overhead tank by the end user. Flow rates of hot and cold water are measured using Rotameters. A magnetic drive pump is used to circulate the hot water from recirculation type water tank. Digital temperature indicator with multichannel switch is fitted in control panel to observe the temperature of hot andcold fluids at inlet and outlet of heat exchanger.

The plates are sealed at their outer edges and around the ports by gaskets, which are so arranged that the fluids can be directed alternately into passages formed between the plates. It consists of a horizontal and a vertical condenser of shell & tube type fitted with steam traps from where condensate is collected in measuring cylinder. The present set-up is designed to determine the thermal conductivity of insulating powder. Thermal Conductivity of Insulating Powder Apparatus consists of two thin walled concentric copper spheres of different diameter. Inner sphere houses Nichrome Wire heater and heat flows radially outwards. Insulating powder is filled between the annulus spaces of these two spheres. Temperature sensors at different positions are fitted to measure surface temperatures of spheres.

A Digital Temperature Controller is provided to have an automatic smooth control on required heat input to the heater as per user requirements. Further steady state of experiment is achieved in very less time as compared to manual control. Electronic energy meter is provided to measure the heat input.

In most industrial processes including reactors, heat is to be added or extracted to control the process. The addition and removal of heat is done by passing steam or water in a jacket fitted to the outside of the vessel or passing steam or cold water in helical coil inside the vessel. For effective heat transfer and even distribution of heat, the liquid inside is continuously agitated. The present set-up offers us a comparative study of Jacket & Helical coil, which can be operated simultaneously. It is a stainless steel jacketed vessel with helical coil of copper is fitted inside. A variable speed stirrer is fitted in the vessel. Variation in temperature of inside water is measured and is noted. Jacketed vessel is fitted with steam trap for condensate collection.

Flow rate of water can be controlled and measured using valve and Rotameter. Water to be supplied by laboratory overhead tank at constant head condition by end user. Temperature of inlet and outlet of both hot & cold fluids are measured by temperature sensors.

The Unsteady State Heat Transfer Unit consists of two small test cylinders of same size but different material. Each cylinder is fitted with a temperature sensor in the centre to observe the temperature of cylinder when is under study. Any one of them is heated by a constant temperature water bath, till steady state is reached. Double Effect Evaporator deals with the concentration of a non- volatile solute from a solution by the removal of required amount of volatile solvent. Usually the solvent is water. Long tube evaporators are usually used for the concentration of foamy liquids. The set-up is consists of two evaporators fitted in series. Each is made up of Stainless Steel tubes surrounded by a Stainless Steel jacket and fitted with accumulator.

Dilute solution is feed to the first evaporator. Steam from a steam generator is supplied to evaporator to concentrate the dilute feed solution to a desired level. The jacket is fitted with a steam trap and the condensate is collected at the end of trap. The vapours of volatile solvent produced in first evaporator are supplied to the second evaporator. The vapours of volatile solvent are condensed in a shell & tube type condenser and the balance non-volatile solute is collected in the accumulator.

The present set-up is designed to study the heat transfer in natural convection. It consists of a vertical test pipe with an electric heating element fitted in a rectangular duct.The duct having acrylic front side for the visualization of vertical tube, is open at the top andbottom and forms an enclosure that serves the purpose of undisturbed surrounding. The heat is lost from the tube to the surrounding air by natural convection. It is polished to minimize the radiation losses. The temperature is measured by temperature sensors and displayed.

A Digital Temperature Controller is provided to have an automatic smooth control on required heat input to the heater as per user requirements. Further steady state of experiment is achieved in very less time as compared to manual control. Electronic energy meter is provided to measure the heat input.

The present set-up is designed to study the heat transfer in forced convection. It consists of a test pipe surrounded by a heater externally and fitted with a blower unit with valve for varying the air flow rate. Four Temperature Sensors are embedded on the test section and two are placed in the air stream at the entrance and exit of the test section. A digital temperature indicator measures the temperature profile along the test section. An orifice with manometer is fitted on the delivery side of the blower to measure the flow of air. A Digital Temperature Controller is provided to have an automatic smooth control on required heat input to the heater as per user requirements. The present set-up is designed to study Vertical Condenser. It consists of a vertical condenser having a shell fitted with tubes. Cold fluid flows through inside the tubes and steam flows through the shell. Steam generator is fitted with heater to provide steam controlled by a Digital Temperature controller. Level indicator helps to maintain level of water in steam generator. Valves are provided to control the flow rates of cold fluids.

Flow rate of cold water is measured using a Rotameter. Shell is fitted with steam traps from where condensate is collected in measuring cylinder. Temperature of inlet and outlet of both hot & cold fluids are measured by temperature sensors.

Open Pan Evaporator is a process for concentrating a solution by vaporizing a part or all of the solvent. In most of the cases the solvent is water. The Pan Evaporator set-up is designed to study the fundamentals of evaporation process. The set-up consists of a jacketed pan evaporator made of stainless steel and an electrically heated steam generator of suitable capacity. To evaporate the solution in pan, steam is allowed to enter in the jacket using a control valve. Steam is produced in a steam generator, made of Stainless Steel. Steam generator is complete with heater, feed valve, vent valve, steam control valve, pressure gauge, safety valve, drain, level indicator and Digital Temperature controller.
A digital temperature indicator with temperature sensor is also provided to observe temperature during experimentation. Condensate is collected from steam trap for energy measurement. Tilting is done by means of a rotating wheel to empty the pan.
