The fan is also called as impeller. The motorrotates the impeller inside the housing, and due tocentrifugal force, exerted by the vanes of the impeller,partial pressure is developed at the inlet and outlet of thehousing. The air flows through a pipe whereinstrumentation has been done to measure the pressurehead, velocity and flow. “WIND TUNNEL” has been developed to perform variousexperiments of aerodynamics and fluid flow. This is aopen circuit Wind Tunnel provides a region of controlledair flow into which models can be fitted at downstream ofworking section. The Tunnel consists of bell mouthshaped entry to guide the air smoothly into settlingchamber and stabilizes the air flow. This stabilized airfollows working section or test section where variousmodels can be tested. Test section with acrylic sheet, isprovided for visual observation. After working section airleaves the diffuser section which reduces the dynamicpressure at the exit. An axial fan, coupled with motor isused to produce desired wind velocity in the tunnel. Aspeed control unit facilitates user, to haveexperimentations on different speeds, to enhance thestudy. RPM of the fan are measured and indicated on adigital RPM indicator in control panel.The air flows through a test section whereinstrumentation has been done to measure the pressurehead, velocity and flow. The present set-up is designed to study the Double StageAir compressor. The set-up consists of a double stagereciprocating type air compressor. It is driven by a motorthrough a belt and pulley system. The drive motor isswinging field type and supplied with dial type springbalance which permits direct torque measurement. Thisarrangement facilitates the end user to calculate thepower transmitted by the motor to the compressor,accurately. To calculate input power to the motor, anenergy meter is provided and in this way, by knowing theinput and output, efficiency of the compressor iscalculated easily. The outlet of the air compressor isconnected to air reservoir and suction is connected toanother air manifold tank. The compressor draws air fromthis manifold tank which is provided with bellow at oneside. This tank also has an orifice with manometer toobserve and calculate the air flow rate. The compressedair from the outlet side of the compressor is stored inprovided reservoir. The reservoir is equipped withPressure Gauge, Control Valve, Safety Valve, Drain etc. Anwater cooled intercooler for air, in between both head, isprovided to cool the hot and compressed air beforeentering the second stage. Temperature of inlet air, aftersingle compression, inlet and outlet of secondcompression and pressure in reservoir and atintermediate stage can be measured by Temp. Sensorsand pressure gauges.

The present set-up is an open type wind tunnel toperform the experimentations on boundary layer. Thetest section of “Boundary Layer Apparatus” has beendeveloped to perform various experiments ofaerodynamics and fluid flow. This open circuit WindTunnel, provides a region of air flow. A layer of fluid,which comes in contact with the boundary surface,adheres to it on account of viscosity, as a real fluid flowpast a solid boundary. As a result, ‘no slip’ conditionprevails. If the boundary is at rest, the fluid at theboundary has zero velocity and the velocity increases ifthe fluid is away from the boundary. The present set-up is designed to study the HydraulicRam. Hydraulic Ram is used for pumping small quantity ofwater at high head, when large quantity of water at smallhead is available. It operates on the principle that ifflowing water is suddenly brought to rest in a long pipe, aphenomenon known as water hammer occurs, wherein apressure wave travels along the pipe. This principle isused in the Hydraulic Ram to pump water. The set-upconsists of a chamber incorporating pulse and non-returnvalves. This constant head tank gets water from the pumpwhich draw water from sump tank. A fixed heightoverflow in constant head tank maintains the constantwater head in the tank. An air vessel above the valvechamber smoothes cyclic fluctuations for the Ramdelivery. Different pressure may be applied to the pulsevalve to change the closing pressure and hence theoperating characteristic. To measure the waste water, ameasuring tank with flow diverter is provided. Flow ofuseful water delivered by the ram is measured with thehelp of measuring cylinder and stopwatch. A pressuregauge in delivery line of useful water is also provided toknow the head of water.Present set-up is self-contained water re-circulating unit,provided with a sump tank, centrifugal pump etc. Wateris pumped by means of centrifugal pump and passingthrough the overhead tank and ram chamber, it returnsback to the sump which make the system re-circulatingtype. Flow of water is diverted either to measuring tankor sump tank with the means of a flow diverter, whenneeded. This apparatus demonstrates some of the major physicalprocesses found in hydrology. The unit comprises arectangular open Sand tank, made of stainless steel. Atinlet side, another tank of stainless steel is fitted withstilling section. A junction of nozzles is fitted on the top ofthe sand tank. This junction is provided with the variableheight adjusting arrangement. Every nozzle has a valvewhich facilitates to select combination of nozzles andgeometry of rain fall. The Water is fed to these nozzleswith the help of a centrifugal pump connected to a sumptank. A valve arrangement is provided to change thewater flow either through nozzles or direct to the tank. The present set-up is designed to study characteristics ofa given jet pump. The jet pump is coupled to the motorshaft, directly, and named as monoblock jet pump. Tocalculate the input power to the motor, an energy meteris provided.Present set-up is self-contained water re-circulating unit,provided with a sump tank, jet pump etc. Water ispumped by means of jet pump and passing through thepipeline, it returns back to the sump which make thesystem re-circulating type. Flow of water is divertedeither to measuring tank or sump tank with the means ofa flow diverter, when needed. Control valve and Pressuregauge is fitted in discharge line of the jet pump toconduct the experiments on different head and flow.Flow rate of water is measured with the help ofmeasuring tank with piezometer and stopwatch. Thesupplied set-up is complete in all respect. Only watersupply and electricity supply is to be provided by the enduser for running the set-up.
